At least 35 fishermen went missing in the Bay of Bengal as their trawlers caught in storms triggered by a monsoon low and sank in the sea early today.
Fishermen from Dublar Char of the Sunderbans coast said five trawlers carrying 65 fishermen went under water while the fishermen were fishing in different parts of the Bay.
Thirty fishermen managed to swim ashore while 35 others, hailed from Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola and other areas, still remained missing.
A forest official of the Sunderbans (east zone) said hundreds of fishermen caught by stormy weather took shelter in different canals in the sprawling mangrove forest.
River crafts of the forest department have been kept in safe places as the sea became rough due to depression over the Bay.
Despite stormy weather, activities at Mongla Port took place normally.
Met Office hoisted local cautionary signal No three for the seaport.
