Govt plans to make all TIN holders pay tax: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said yesterday the government is planning to introduce a system within the next five years to bring all Tax Identification Number (TIN) holders under the tax net.

"The government is working on developing such a system in the next five years under which anybody holding a TIN will have to pay a minimum tax," Muhith said while inaugurating an online tax submission system at the Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU) at the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The finance minister said those who have TIN will have to pay tax, as the main base of revenue would be income tax. More emphasis should be laid on income tax, he added.

The minister said: "Tax evasion is a global problem. But in our country the extent of tax dodging is very high, and we must get rid of this."

He said although the number of TIN holders in the country is 23 lakh, only 7 lakh pay taxes. The TIN holders who do not pay tax would have to be found out and tax should be realised from them. From the current fiscal year initiative will be taken in 15 zones to increase the number of taxpayers by conducting survey, he said.

NBR Chairman Nasiruddin Ahmed said 36 percent of the total income tax comes from LTUs. Among them, 281 are corporate taxpayers.
